SUBTITLE: A word on the intellectual tools Christians have been taught to fear, thus making them willing parties to their own idiocy.
Too often our culture pits faith against reason as if they are bitter enemies. We are presented with a harsh choice: we can believe in God or we can believe in logic. In the end this creates two types of people: rationalists afraid of God, and Christians afraid of logic.
This false dichotomy has many forms. One of them is God vs Science. Rationalists observe creation, and vaguely imply that these observations might disprove the Creator. Meanwhile, Christians often run away from science for the same reason—that is, they fear that maybe science WILL challenge their belief in God. But both extremes are ridiculous. God created science. It follows, then, that one is never going to be a threat to the other. A Christian—or any honest person—should never run from information.
If a scientist proved that the earth was a billion years old and that evolution could occur, this should not challenge your belief in God in the least. At most, it might challenge your interpretation of Genesis. But that is an entirely different question.
